Snapdragons can be grown throughout the year in most regions of South Africa, but they prefer the cooler months, and in the heat of summer they can sulk and stop blooming for a while, resuming once the weather cools down again. In the winter rainfall regions, snapdragons are traditionally sown or planted out in autumn before the winter rains arrive, and are considered great water-wise annuals. In hot and humid regions snaps are also planted in autumn for a winter and early spring show.

snapdragon flowers are edible and have a mild, slightly bitter, or tangy vegetal flavor, similar to chicory. They can be used as a pretty and colorful garnish or ingredient in a variety of dishes, including salads, canapés, and desserts, or as a decoration for cakes and cocktails.

In traditional medicine, snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus) was used for its anti-inflammatory, resolvent, and stimulant properties, often applied as a poultice to treat skin conditions like ulcers and tumors, as well as hemorrhoids. It was also historically used as a diuretic and for treating scurvy and liver disorders. Modern research indicates the plant contains flavonoids and other compounds with potential anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic properties, with some studies showing promise in inhibiting cancer cell growth.
