"Guavadilla" earned the name because its aroma and flavour profile are reminiscent of Guava, Passionfruit and Pineapple.
Built-in Shock Absorber: Inside its hard, brittle outer shell, the guavadilla has a soft, white, spongy padding. This natural "packaging" protects the seeds and pulp from damage if the fruit falls from its high-climbing vines.
Unlike many fruits that are picked, guavadillas are at their best when they drop off the vine naturally. Experts recommend waiting 24 - 48 hours after they fall, allowing the skin to wrinkle slightly to reach peak sweetness.
The fruit is a powerhouse of beta carotene, which is much higher in the yellow guavadilla than in its purple cousin. It also contains unique alkaloids that can have a mild calming effect, making it a natural remedy for stress or insomnia.
