A pineberry is a unique strawberry cultivar that looks like a white strawberry and famously tastes like a mix of strawberry and pineapple. They have creamy white flesh and skin
They lack anthocyanin, the natural pigment that turns regular strawberries red.
Because they stay white even when ripe, birds often ignore them, thinking they are still underripe and sour.
While they seem like a new "designer" fruit, they are derived from wild Chilean strawberries that have existed for centuries.
Not a GMO: They are a natural hybrid created by crossing two different wild strawberry species—the North American Fragaria virginiana and the South American Fragaria chiloensis.
