Plectranthus verticillatus, commonly known as gossip spurflower or money plant, is a fast-growing, semi-succulent perennial prized for its attractive, trailing foliage and ease of care. It is widely used as an ornamental plant and in traditional medicine.
Common Names: Gossip spurflower, money plant, Swedish ivy
Description: This evergreen plant features soft, fleshy, round, glossy green leaves with scalloped edges, which often have a deep purple underside and are borne on square, sometimes purplish, stems. It produces delicate spikes of small white to pale mauve flowers, typically in spring and autumn, which attract pollinators like bees, butterflies, and birds.
Habitat and Origin: Native to woodland and forest margins in southeast Africa, it thrives in shaded or semi-shaded areas.
Growing Conditions: It is a fairly hardy, low-maintenance plant that prefers well-drained soil rich in organic matter and bright, indirect light or partial shade. It is frost-sensitive and is typically grown as a houseplant or an annual in cooler climates.
Ornamental Uses:
Ground Cover: Its mat-forming and fast-growing nature makes it an excellent ground cover for large, shady garden areas or under trees. It can also help bind soil on shady slopes.
Hanging Baskets/Containers: Its trailing habit makes it ideal for hanging baskets, containers, and window boxes, where its stems can cascade.
Houseplant: It is a popular and robust indoor plant, valued for its lush foliage and ability to tolerate typical indoor conditions and lower light levels.
Wildlife Gardens: The flowers attract a range of insects, and it is a larval host plant for some butterfly species.
Traditional Medicine Uses:  Used in traditional medicine for various ailments, including:
Coughs, colds, and respiratory issues.
Skin infections, burns, bruises, and insect bites (topical application).
Fever and digestive complaints.
It is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs
